Artist’s Statement

Dannie Mercuro is an emerging artist living in Wilmington, NC. Born in New Jersey, growing up along the Carolina coast, and nurtured by her grandparents, her creative development has been a lifelong process. Having inherited many of her grandfather’s Craftsman tools, Dannie has been investigating functional as well as purely aesthetic objects; a process further enhanced by her work in metals classes at Cape Fear Community College. Dannie finds inspiration through working with a minimal level of materials, “making more, while working with less.” Another visual concern involved the combination of a variety of textures. Her art is a junction between functionality and aesthetic primacy; the pieces range from wearable jewelry made of copper and silver, to traditional acrylic paintings with no utilitarian purpose. Much of her work addresses the conflict between the natural and industrial world, often pairing unexpected media to provoke the viewers curiosity.
